Translation Workshop: Prabhjot Kaur's "Bewildered" (UPDATED)

My first attempt a couple of months ago at translating from Punjabi was humbling, but I'm back to give it another shot. As readers may remember, with help from a couple of friends, I put forth an attempt at a translation in the earlier post, only to find that Jasdeep of Parchanve did a much better job of it in the comments.

I'm still looking at the same anthology of Experimental Punjabi Poetry from 1962 (Prayogashil Punjabi Kavita), though this time I'm looking at a poem by Prabhjot Kaur, "Pashemaan Haan," or "Bewildered." This time, with humility in mind, I'll just translate the first three verses today, and put out a call for help from our friend in Chandigarh (Jasdeep) as well as anyone else who might wish to help. The poem is on the theme of corruption....

"I'm a Penitent"
By Prabhjot Kaur

I'm a pickpocket,
I'm ripe for punishment.
I'm the ruin
of the laws of the land,
I'm a culprit.

This is hands-on work
A game, a little give-and-take [her pher]
Your pocket my hand
I'll plant the seeds right away [ratee lagdee naa der]

Every day
Every time
I swear on my soul [karaa praN dil naal]
"Stop, this is the last time
this is the final atrocity
after this I'll make myself stop"
But...
I'm a pickpocket
I'm sick--
somewhere down there [kise Doonghe]
I'm hunting down this disease.

UPDATE:

Jasdeep from Parchanve was kind enough to send over his version of a translation of this poem. Thanks again, Jasdeep!

--
i am a pickpocket
warranted to the punishment
i am an offender
of the law and the nation

its a handiwork
a game, a deceit
your pocket, my hand
does not take much time

every day
every time
i make a vow by heart
"this is the last time
the last shot of dark
then i will quit and end this
petty crime"

but
i am chronic
helpless
a patient of abysmal
lethal disease

i remember very well
my mother and father
the life of these slums
the smell of these drains
the camaradrie of these dead ghosts

some utterances good , some bad
some abuses and curses
sore body parts
sorrow, pain and gloom
the craving of the stomach
the anguish of frustations
neither love nor bondage
was alone and useless
now an offender

in front of these slums
Gandhi Bapu's tomb
high, holy, pure shrine
state tourist spot
calm demeaneared raj ghat
the call of the courts everyday
bewildered and ashamed
i am an offender
i am a chronic pick pocket
